Từ 'comprise' thường bị dùng sai. Nó có nghĩa là *bao gồm* hoặc *cấu thành*, không phải *được bao gồm*. Do đó, ta nói 'The whole comprises the parts' (Tổng thể bao gồm các bộ phận) chứ không nói 'The parts comprise the whole' (các bộ phận bao gồm tổng thể), cách dùng sau nên thay bằng 'The whole is comprised of the parts', hoặc 'The whole is composed of the parts'. 'Comprise' thường được dùng trong văn viết trang trọng hơn là văn nói hàng ngày. So sánh với 'include' (bao gồm) - 'include' đơn giản chỉ liệt kê một phần của cái gì đó, trong khi 'comprise' ám chỉ sự bao gồm hoàn toàn.
Prepositions
'Comprise' không đi trực tiếp với 'of'. Cách dùng đúng là 'be comprised of'. Ví dụ: 'The committee is comprised of five members.'
