Cultural studies khác với anthropology (nhân chủng học) ở chỗ nó tập trung nhiều hơn vào các xã hội hiện đại và ít nhấn mạnh vào việc quan sát khách quan mà quan tâm hơn đến vai trò của người nghiên cứu trong việc kiến tạo ý nghĩa. Nó cũng khác với sociology (xã hội học) ở chỗ nó nhấn mạnh văn hóa như một lực lượng kiến tạo xã hội, thay vì chỉ là một sản phẩm của các cấu trúc xã hội.
