Dial-up internet là một công nghệ cũ hơn, chậm hơn so với các kết nối băng thông rộng như cáp quang, ADSL hoặc kết nối di động. Nó sử dụng modem để chuyển đổi tín hiệu số từ máy tính thành tín hiệu tương tự có thể truyền qua đường dây điện thoại, và ngược lại. Do sử dụng đường dây điện thoại, nó có thể gây cản trở việc sử dụng điện thoại thông thường trong khi kết nối internet.
