Reverse osmosis (RO) is a process where a solvent passes through a semipermeable membrane from a more concentrated solution to a less concentrated one. It is the opposite of normal osmosis, requiring pressure to be applied to overcome osmotic pressure. It is commonly used in water purification and desalination. While similar to filtration, reverse osmosis utilizes pressure and a very fine membrane to filter out a much wider range of substances. It's distinct from 'filtration' which typically refers to the removal of larger particles.
