English Definition
A major mechanism by which eukaryotic cells selectively degrade intracellular proteins. It involves two discrete steps: first, ubiquitin, a small regulatory protein, is attached to a protein substrate, marking it for degradation. Second, the tagged protein is recognized and degraded by the proteasome, a large protein complex.
